Legends of Tomorrow aka the show queer fans deserve.

Updated: Dec 21, 2018

Legend of Tomorrow really is the show we, as a community, deserve. It's fun, a little bit ridiculous, and so damn queer. This is a show that puts the wlw ship at the forefront, refusing to follow the same old 'only one gay character/ship per show' formula that so many others adhere too.

Legends is the show that blesses the world with Sara Lance, the badass, bad girl bisexual. In addition to Sara we have Ava, Gary and Constantine, who are all openly queer characters; meaning this show currently (as I write this because you never know what might change in this show) consists of four canon gay, bisexual and/or pansexual characters. Further to this, there appears to be something brewing between Charlie and Zari, who fans have lovingly dubbed Zarlie. So with this development, that could potentially account for two more queer characters bringing the grand total to six. Six queer characters in one show; it's what dreams are made of. Legends really is turning the tables on the homophobic stan argument of "you've got one queer character, isn't that enough?"

Avalance appears to be the fan favourite ship in Legends of Tomorrow, and has seemingly blew up in recent weeks. The beloved couple consists of Sara, the enigmatic bad girl leader of the legends, and Ava Sharpe who is the lovable director of the time bureau. Their story is not on the back burner, they are not the side characters, and they don't have a measly couple of seconds of screen time here or there. They are the ship of the show. They kiss on screen, share pillow talk, and even surprise each other with strip teases - yes I'm still shook. Basically, what I'm getting at is Sara and Ava' relationship is treated the way all shows treat the heterosexual couples that they feature and it is beyond refreshing. Fans around the world seem to have sunk their teeth into this story, and all the goodness that comes with their narratives being treated exactly the same way any heterosexual storyline would; basking in a show that week by week seems to add yet another queer character, you know, for good measure.

Legends of Tomorrow features an array of queer characters and storylines, one of which included Constatine kissing his ex boyfriend in order to save the world. Yes, they had a gay kiss save the world! But I digress, as far as I’m aware it appears it is Sara Lance who has been the stand out character of Legends for quite some time, we've seen her laugh in the face of the bury your gays trope - numerous times might I add. We've seen her unashamedly engaging in relationships with both men and women, and we've also witnessed her hooking up with Supergirl's resident lesbian Alex Danvers. Sara is a take no prisoners and live life on the edge kinda girl, and fans love her for it, I do too.

Caity Lotz who plays Lance is a fierce LGBT ally who loves portraying Sara and it shows, Lotz along with openly queer cast mate Maisie Richardson-Sellers who portrays Charlie were in attendance at Clexacon, the LBT women’s media convention in Las Vegas, whilst there they engaged with their lady-loving fanbase talking about all things queer representation, including just how important that representation truly is. It's the casts support and acknowledgement of LGBT fans that makes their characters and their show all the more alluring.

Legends Of Tomorrow is a show that not only talks the talk but 100% walks the walk when it comes to queer representation and I can not recommend it enough. Here's hoping that we get more seasons, more diversity, and more love for a superhero show that is finally putting our narratives at the forefront.
